    It is a "ThumbThing".

I own one, like Matt says, it's for holding your book open with one hand.

I bought it and used it about once, quite unpleasant in use. I realised I was perfectly capable of reading one handed without an uncomfortable lump of plastic on my thumb.

i would have geussed a minimalistic tape holder, whre you slip the roll of tape on the triangle and the "legs" keep it from rlling of your desk, but now i think of it: THAT MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL

i know i am late but i just saw this at books a million yesterday. you put your finger through the hole. then place the whole piece in the middle of your book page that you are reading. it helps to keep the pages open.

I was going to suggest it was a stoat, weasel or badger harness too. Difficult to gauge the scale from the photo. The orthotic ones tend to be redder.

This is used to hold open pages in a book you are holding. You wear it on your thumb and the flanges will hold the opposite pages down so you can hold the book open one handed. You then do not need a lap or a desk or a flat surface to hold the book against.

It is a combination book holder AND bookmark. You slide it on your thumb and it allows you to hold open a small book with one hand. When you're done, the flat part slides into the book as a bookmark. (I have a bunch of these.)
