“Basketball Girl” now an athlete!

Qian Hongyan, the young amputee who used a basketball in lieu of legs (featured previously on Neatorama), has joined a swim team! She hopes to compete in the 2012 Paralympics in London. Although she now has prosthetic legs, she uses the basketball during swim training to help her get in and out of the pool. Link -via Arbroath

If we can make prosthetic flippers for dolphins, surely we must be able to supply this girl with a fun mermaids tail of some sort? That basketball would drag too much in the water..

Most likely possible, but it might violate the standards of the Paralympics.

Seeing that she has to be sponsored to go to the Paralympics I wonder why she hasn’t gotten any neat prosthetics she can use to move?

I doubt she actually uses the basketball in the pool. She can probably swim like a fish without it! I got the impression that the basketball was just for getting into and out of the pool.

    Good for her!

Wow! I’m humbled and kind of ashamed that I didn’t/couldn’t/haven’t yet done anything all that special with my life. Go basketball girl go!
