Dogs get so much of their confidence from their pack leaders (us!), so all the ways we reduce their confidence seem hurtful. My has been blind for 3 years. He goes everywhere with me (camping,running,riding on my motorcycle) and gets along fine with a bit of firm command. This seems like a crutch in the derogatory meaning of the word.
