Olympic Medal Map.

The big nations (Russia, China, and the United States) vie to see who can win the most Olympic medals, but when the medal count is adjusted for population, the Bahamas are king! Sure, they’ve only won five medals in the last three Summer Games, but with a population of 331,000 that’s the most per capita medals. This map shows the countries that have won the most medals per million in population. Medal counts are only from the Summer Games since 1996, because the fall of the Soviet Union changed national boundaries considerably. http://www.unusualmaps.com/olympics.html -via Look at This

medals per capita is pretty accurate.
What would be interesting to see is the % of GDP (or other appropriate measure of national wealth) spent per medal in relation to investment in national olympic programs. (does that make sense?)

I think that this is very interesting data. As for accuracy, it is what it is. Other analysis, such as the ones suggested, would also be interesting. I personally don't care as much about who won as who participated. Plotting participation vs. GDP would be my wish.

Those are three interesting ideas there. I'm sure the statistics needed are available somewhere, it would just take time and a little math and graphics work to make it so.

Hi
I found a small widget that has the 2008 stats.
This widget can show medals won per million dollar GDP.
In addition the view can be changed to - total medals per million inhabitants.

Check it out:-)

As you point out (vandoo and Edward) this angle of the medal race gives quite another view:-)

Great discussion I'll be following it:-)
