Fun facts about the pompadour: a lot of pompadours were pouffed up with false hair extensions, which had been powdered with flour to appear white. The very rich could afford to visit a stylist every week or so for hairstyle maintenance, but poorer folks would have to wait a month or more in between stylings... meaning that many of these delicious flour-filled hairpieces would become happy homes for mice, fleas and roaches. Ick.

Um... Those are not mullets in that photo. All three of them have long hair on the sides and top. A mullet is short everywhere but the back. Mullets were not popularized by 80s metal musicians. They all had long hair all over. It was hockey and soccer players that popularized mullets in the 80s.

I wear a mullet all winter, super-short in september and most of the summer, and a short mohawk in August.

So, I get called a redneck, a skinhead, and a punk rocker by the sort of people who can't see under surfaces.

I find this highly amusing (I'm a 45 year old businessman) which is why I do it.

The comment about why the Chinese refused to have their hair cut is erroneous. Religion in China was relatively freeform with the worship of things such as "the god of doorways" readily acceptable. Confucianism was a social belief. The Confucian belief was that if your hair was cut or you lost a limb, etc. it was an offense that dishonored your parents because you were wasting the natural gifts they had given you at birth and in life.
