Blue Hole in Belize

Posted by Alex in Pictures, Travel on July 25, 2007 at 1:23 am

Blue Hole, Lighthouse Reef, Belize

Belize Blue Hole from afar

About 60 miles from Belize City, there is a perfectly circular 1,000 (305 m) feet across and 400 feet (123 m) wide deep "Blue Hole." The hole, part of the Lighthouse Reef system, was once an opening to a cave system during the Ice Age – it is now a magnet for extreme divers:

For all the practical purposes the over 400-foot depth makes the Blue Hole a bottomless pit. The walls are sheer from the surface until a depth of approximately 110 feet where you will begin to encounter stalactite formtions which actually angle back, allowing you to dive underneath monstrous overhangs. Hovering amongst the stalactites, you can’t help but feel humbled by the knowledge that the massive formation before you once stood high and dry above the surface of the sea eons ago.

Want to build your very own arcade system? Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to make your own high-quality MAME (multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) system by Todd Moore:

There are many factors to consider–You could drop $3,000 and buy a complete arcade system that plays maybe 100 games, or you could assemble your own for about half the price and play thousands of games. The choice was an easy one for me.

Driving to Mongolia in an Ice Cream Truck.

Posted by Miss Cellania in Auto & Transportation, Travel on July 24, 2007 at 11:56 am

.

Ryan Walker and two companions are driving to Mongolia in an ice cream truck as part of the Mongol Rally. They are also delivering ice cream along the way.

The Mongol Rally is a charity event limited to 200 teams and this year all the places were snapped up in under one minute. Participants travel a third of the way around the world from London to the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar, in about four weeks, in a vehicle with a one-litre engine or less.

10,000 miles, 20 countries, in 30 days. When they reach the end of the race, the vehicle will be sold for charity, so the team is not quite sure how they will return to England. Link -via Fark

The s-bots Swarm-Bots.

Posted by Alex in Everything Else on July 24, 2007 at 1:21 am

The swarm-bots are coming! The swarm-bots are coming! Here’s an article about the creation of Roderich Groß, Marco Dorigo and colleagues: robots that can assemble themselves into a bigger entity to perform a certain task.

With a camera and eight colored LEDs, the s-bots can “communicate” with each other on their status. For example, blue lights mean that an s-bot is not connected, while a red light signifies that the s-bot has gripped another s-bot (or a passive object) and tells other s-bots to approach and latch on. A mobility system of tracks and wheels, or “treels,” enables the s-bots to navigate on rough terrain, and gives them good steering abilities.

“Swarm-bot combines the advantages of multi-robot and modular robot systems,” said Groß of the robot’s intelligence. “The component modules of swarm-bot, the s-bots, are fully autonomous and mobile, and they choose whether to assemble into a bigger entity to perform a task.”

The Gods Hate Kansas

Posted by Alex in Book & Literature, Pictures on July 24, 2007 at 1:19 am

Creationism aside, turns out the Gods hate Kansas. Yes, that’s a real book by Joseph Millard (1964, cover painting by Jack Thurston):

THE GODS HATE KANSAS by Joseph Millard
INVASION FROM THE STARS

It began with the landing of nine meteors in Kansas. Then, suddenly, it exploded into a massive catastrophe.

First, the meteorite investigating team were turned into automatons, ruled by an unknown, alien intelligence. They barricaded themselves
from the world and began building a rocket project, aimed at traversing the stars.

Then the Crimson Plague struck, sweeping over Earth’s population, destroying human capacities and defying scientific probing.

Only a few escaped the invasion from outer space, among them astrophysicist Curt Temple, whose girlfriend, Lee Mason, was enslaved, her personality changed.

Curt knew he had to pit his slim knowledge against the most perfect intelligence in the cosmos to save the world – and the woman he loved.

MultiCam, Now That’s Camouflage!

Posted by Alex in Weapons & War on July 24, 2007 at 1:11 am

We’ve seen examples of funny military camouflage before, here’s an actually brilliant one: MultiCam by Crye Precision.

You can see just how effective the camouflage is: there is a guy slightly left to the middle of the picture above. This is actually one of the easiest to pick out – there are photos where you just can’t see the guy.

The company’s website has a neat gallery where you can play "Where’s Waldo."

Fully Functional Warthog.

Posted by Miss Cellania in Auto & Transportation on July 23, 2007 at 1:54 pm

The wizards at WETA made this awesome Warthog for Neill Blomkamp’s upcoming series of Halo Shorts.

Um. The dudes at WETA made a Warthog. I don’t mean that they made a big plastic thing that looks like a Warthog. I mean they built a fully-functioning, four-wheel steering, powerful, off-road vehicle with a machine gun on the back. At the correct scale. If you live near Wellington, New Zealand, you might even see some crazy machine-shop dude from WETA fishtailing around your base, ahem, I mean neighborhood.

The Laws of Cat Physics.

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets on July 23, 2007 at 7:46 am

Law of Cat Acceleration
A cat will accelerate at a constant rate, until he gets good and ready to stop.

Law of Cat Embarrassment
A cat’s irritation rises in direct proportion to her embarrassment times the amount of human laughter.

Law of Milk Consumption
A cat will drink his weight in milk, squared, just to show you he can.

Law of Furniture Replacement
A cat’s desire to scratch furniture is directly proportional to the cost of the furniture.

Law of Cat Composition
A cat is composed of “Matter” plus “Anti-Matter” plus “It Doesn’t Matter”.

There are lots more laws. They make perfect sense to cats and people who live with cats. Link -via the Presurfer

Where confiscated items go.

Posted by Miss Cellania in Travel on July 23, 2007 at 7:31 am

As you go through airport security, you find out that the scissors in your purse are too big. You can leave the security line and mail them, or take them to your car (which could be quite a hike), but you’d have to go to the back of the security line and start all over again. Most people voluntarily surrender any contraband items to avoid missing their plane. This Wall Street Journal article looks at what various states are doing with the items that are confiscated.
