Virtual Visit to The Père-Lachaise Cemetery

Posted by yayo in Everything Else on July 28, 2007 at 8:27 pm

Oscar Wilde tombThe Père-Lachaise Cemetery [wiki] is one of the most famous in the world. It is the final resting place for many historical figures – for example, take a look at the tomb above: the much-kissed grave of Oscar Wilde.

There are also a lot of monuments depicting the history of France and commemorating their heroes, for example this one for those who came to Spain to fight the fascists in 1936 as part of the International Brigades [wiki].

Go to the page to find the tombs of Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, Edith Piaf, Maria Callas and others. There are a lot of panoramas, photos and a map in this virtual visit.

Laminar Flow.

Posted by Miss Cellania in Science & Tech, Video Clips on July 28, 2007 at 7:56 pm

From Wikipedia:

Laminar flow, sometimes known as streamline flow, occurs when a fluid flows in parallel layers, with no disruption between the layers. In fluid dynamics, laminar flow is a flow regime characterized by high momentum diffusion, low momentum convection, pressure and velocity independent from time. It is the opposite of turbulent flow. In nonscientific terms laminar flow is “smooth,” while turbulent flow is “rough.”

This is a fluid motion demonstration by the Physics Department at the University of New Mexico. Comments at both YouTube and Videosift noted that the physicist had trouble counting five turns, but the brightest scientists I know have trouble matching their socks. The Cairo Toe.

An artificial toe found on an Egyptian mummy may be the oldest working prosthesis in existence. The leather and wood toe dates from between 1069 and 664 BC, and shows wear, meaning it was used during the person’s lifetime. Researchers will test a reproduction of the toe on volunteers who are missing their right big toe to see if it helps them walk. An earlier toe is believed to be merely cosmetic, since it doesn’t bend. Link -via Arbroath

Major Expansion at Area 51

Posted by TheGoodReverend in Architecture, Paranormal, Pictures on July 28, 2007 at 8:49 am

The top-secret military reservation at Groom Lake, Nevada, long thought to be the Air Force’s test site for experimental aircraft (so experimental that it was reverse engineered from UFOs, if you buy the wildest conjecture), is expanding with the construction of several new buildings and roads, according to satellite footage. Speculation mounts that it may be part of an expanded Defense Department investment in experimental craft since 9/11:

[Defense Technology International Editor-in-Chief Bill] Sweetman suggests “there is only one reason for a base like this: to flight-test hardware that is secret and visibly different from other aircraft.” The new hangar, he continues, might “include experimental platforms pushing the boundaries of stealth, particularly in terms of allowing aircraft to persist undetected around the clock, and experimental [unmanned aerial vehicles] and [unmanned combat aerial vehicles].”

White Dwarf: Bicycle-Powered Blimp

Posted by Alex in Auto & Transportation on July 28, 2007 at 1:31 am

That’s a bicycle-powered blimp built by Bill Watson in 1985:

It’s the White Dwarf, built by Bill Watson and others for the comedian Gallagher in about 1984. This beautiful and innovative pedal-powered was used by Gallagher to do a Showtime special, Bryan Allen flew it 58 miles to set an FAI world record for that class airship, Bill and friends took it to Oshkosh, and then they put it behind Bill Watson’s parents’ house, where it stayed for about 14 years.

It still works! Link

Reality Desktop

Posted by Alex in Video Clips on July 28, 2007 at 1:29 am

Our computer’s desktop uses elements from real life to signify function (for example, the trash can icon for "delete"). This clip shows what a "real life" desktop would look like, if it were inspired by the digital desktop.
