hi guys i just went to Paris July 2010 its a very nice place.i asked some one in English with out asking if they speak english that guy did not even bothered to say anything and shook his head..i was amazed and i realized i am not in england. so its alays nice to approach some one in there language with a nice gesture and any one will be more happey to help long live France.

Interesting article. The only part I really knew was that the tower was built for the 1889 Expo, and that Eiffel designed the Statue of Liberty.

As far as people go, I encountered many people all over Italy who lived up to the Parisiens’ reputation for rudeness and intolerance, but the people I met in France were generally ok.

When I visit a foreign country, I do make it a point to learn how to say, “I don’t speak [the language], do you speak English?” This backfired in Israel: several people responded to me in Hebrew anyway since I was speaking the language.

The old lady said:”in my country there are recycle bins doesn’t you have it here?” as if we were indigenous.
I forgot to tell her that colonialism did the same to indigenous people like they did in AMerica.

Wow!
I feel fortunate because I speak English and French.
I love Americans and love French people.
I lived in Paris for one year and, man!, if you speak the language, even those who knows the basic,and explain your reasons they are very helpful. You have no idea how many times French people helped me.
But give me a break! I was walking one day and an American old lady started asking me in English, without even asking me if I speak English or not, informations about… I don’t know what it was because I thought it was very rude of her not asking “Do you speak English?”.
I told her in my language, Portuguese, I don’t speak English or French.
It seems this old lady follows me because I was in my country and she came with a coke can and demanded me where on earth was the can recycle bin?
I’m sorry but I told her that in my country we don’t have it and almost told her to get the can back to her country since it was her countries garbage she was holding.
lol
A friend of mine showed her where was the right garbage to put her coke can.
I don’t like the when Americans like this old lady behaves this way.
I love Americans and have many American friends.
I am telling these stories just to say that this kind of generalization and stereotypes makes no sense.
I believe that some Americans will have this antipathy towards French people till the end of the times.
What about Germans? Polish or Russian people.
Oh! I am Brazilian.
I would like to inform you that our capital is Brasília and that samba has nothing to do with salsa or other Latin musics and dances.

There are many things you don’t know about Brazil and I also don’t like the stereotypes.
Well, I believe that there are many errors for some readers amuse themselves and I will not read to correct them.
I loved the post.

English people are in my humble opinion more rude and arrogant than most other nations, we expect other countries to automatically speak english when we are the ones visiting their country, we shove and push when queing( only the germans exceed us in this annoying trait). The most annoying thing about paris was the illegal immigrants selling dodgy eiffel towers, i found the most eefective way to get them off your back was to speak in german to them ,as most africans dont speak german they tend to give up.As for the eiffel tower, its awesome, surreal just standing there infront of it, and the construction was something to aspire to, nearly all construction projects today are late and over budget, this on the other hand was an exception to the rule!

I have been staying in the South of France for some time… and I have to agree with Carolynne… the people are rude, inconsiderate, aloof, and in my opinion, just plain ignorant (in general!) I feel bad for the people who are considerate, polite, and intelligent, they need to rise up and clean this ancient Roman empire up! You can’t imagine how bad the air quality is near Nice – LOTS of people and companies just burn their rubbish, (who cares about NEIGHBORS!) … there are millions of two-stroke motorcycles everywhere, not to mention the cigarettes, and dog poop! The environment is disgusting! Holland here I come!

I was in Paris recently and it sure made me proud that I am an AUSSIE for we are so far ahead of this city re pollution,wether it be the air—or the dog poop EVERYWHERE I stepped,it is FILTHY the locals dont seem to care—maybe because it is full of tourist? who are also just as rude—–

for one, I agree with the whole “not an intentional suicide” duh! it’s not a suicide then. and I agree with if France sucks then America blows. and I was shocked to hear there was only one death in the construction for such a large monument. and lastly, some french people find americans annoying. like us and illegal immigrants. others find it funny. like of all my friends that speak other languages, I want to hear them cause it really is difficult to learn

I’ve traveled the world, and of all the cities I’ve visited (including remote places like Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia), Paris, France was the rudest and its people the most unhelpful.

btw the French loved me and my friends when we visited Paris and we’re all Americans. If the French were rude to you, you’re probably just stupid or obnoxious or something.

Also, if you go to Paris remember that their national language, with pride and dignity, is French. If you don’t speak French, don’t scream English at them.

I went to France and I found the French to be very pleasant people. The Parisians were in a hurry and a little pushy, but no more so than in any other city I’ve been in. And most people were very tolerant of my pidgen French. The Eiffel Tower seems kind of small and sedate by today’s standards (compared to the CN Tower, for example) but it’s still a great piece of engineering and a lot of fun to go up.
