Here’s the headline from this 1950 Motorola ad touting how owning its TV will mean better grades at school for your children, keeping them out of mischief, and strengthen family ties.

Are you trying to tell me that the Ad above suprises you? Please tell me that you're not trying to claim that you've never learned anything fom tv? Back in the 50's when the majority of people didn't have tv's, getting one was a new source of information, and what does a new source of information do? Gee, let me think! If you look at the average I.Q. in america in the 40's before tv's were in almost every household, it was ten points lower than the end of the 50's. What changed? We all know the american education system didn't, it was the widespread availability of information through tv.

Think before you start to ridicule something from the past.

So were they correct about cigarettes being good for us, too?

Who ridiculed anything? I thought it was posted just to show the change in attitudes since the 50's, which is amusing. Maybe they're actually ridiculing today's attitudes.

Say, weren't we saying the exact same thing about computers and the Internet?

Of course it's ridicule. Just like poking fun at the fashions from the 60's.

We're humans: we like to feel smugly superior to whatever we can.

Hey, I got rid of my TV. I have better things to do. Like wasting time on the computer. LOL No really, I think TV rots brain cells. Neatorama is all the news I need. :)

In Australia bigpond are currently running an advertising campaign suggesting that their broad-band service will make your child smarter. Not a lot changes in advertising land.
