This bizarre bat species hadn’t been seen in 40 years, and has never been photographed before. German biologist Natalie Weber found 16 Maclaud’s horseshoe bats in a cave in Guinea and took the picture. The bat’s face folds are thought to be an aid in echolation. Link -via The Pet Blog

I keep staring at it and I’m still not seeing a bat. A wing, yes, an eye, and a giant ear…Just can’t assemble them into one overall working picture of a bat. Weird.

It’s the same for me. According to where the wings, ears, and eye are, I feel like I should be able to recognize the face. What gives?

Its face looks like an explosion. Apparently, that’s natural.

What’s horseshoe about it? I would’ve called it Maclaud’s Really Big Eared bats!

it is a common optical illusion called mild retardation that inhibits your mind’s ability to absorb visual information that is unique and abnormal. it’s what’s preventing you from thinking that this is a bat. christ.
