Inmates Refuse to Get Out of Jail Because the Food is Too Good!

By Alex in Crime & Law on Jun 26, 2007 at 5:38 pm

Here’s a not-Paris jail story for you: inmates at the Parappana Agrahara prison in Bangalore, India, are refusing to leave because the food is so good! Prison officials are blaming the Hare Khrisnas:

Small-time crooks are refusing to apply for bail, swelling the ranks of the prison to 4,700. Also, juvenile offenders are lying to the police about their age to get into the adult prison, according to the AFP.

ISKCON, commonly known as the Hare Krishna movement, started serving its flavorful vegetarian fare in the jail on May 21 under contract from the prisons department. [...]

"When we are getting tasty, nutritious food three times a day here, why should we go out and commit crimes," said prisoner Raja Reddy, who has been arrested 20 times in 30 years for theft, robbery and burglary.

I was listening to NPR radio tis morning and there was a story very similar to this one.

In Italy, there is a maximum security prison where the inmates work as waiters and cooks in a restaurant at the prison itself! I remember hearing that the food is so good there people reserve seats at the restaurant months in advance. A woman was also interviewed and she said that she didn’t mind being waited on by a murderer. She said it added to the experience!

To the above poster, I believe that story was featured on Neatorama a few weeks ago…

But I was going to say: I can speak from personal experience that Hare Krishnas are amazing cooks.

Back in the 18th and early 19th centuries in Maine, the prison system there had a food problem. They needed a food that was cheap, abundant and preferably one that the prisoners would find digusting.

They did find such a food, and the prisoners did indeed find it repulsive and hard to eat. Prisoners who were able to make deals would usually try and arrange to be served this digusting dish less than 3 times a week.

What is this dish? Maine lobster.
