You do know that this candy has stirred quite the controversy, don’t you? In some countries they have names that roughly translate to ‘nigger kisses.’ Which makes the name dickmann’s the least of its’ problems.
Crazy name yes, but those things are great. Thin chocolate shell, light marshmallow filling, and wafer at the bottom. They’re packaged in boxes of 16.
Damn near the first thing I buy when I’m in Germany.
Great stuff.
Titus is right. I was raised in Germany and we loved these treats and didn’t think much of what they were called at first (“Neger Kussen”) and were appalled when we got older and realized what it meant!
In German “Dick” actually means “fat” or “bulky”. So the name wants to imply that you buy bulky chocolate-covered cream cakes.
Those are actually really gross. I bought them in the Netherlands and yeah, like nasty chocolate covered marshmellow grossness
It got cancelled on the website someone already did it. can anyone tell me where the original ones are?
Those Dickmanns aren’t anything like marshmallows! I live in Germany but spent also almost 2 years in Canada – and I know what marshmallows are like. Texture’s the same, perhaps lighter, but the taste is definitely different from that of marshmallows. Sweeter, I’d say. And yep, should we call them Nigger Kisses?? No – I prefer in that case “Dickmanns” ..
In Germany as a child we would put a “Dickmanns, into a crusty roll and smacked it down- it was absolutely delicious – this was called – Klatsch Brotchen- Smack Roll.
In terms of the name years ago no-one paid that much attention to political correction especially not those millions of children that loved to eat them.
For example- Ba Ba Black sheep is now deemed as being offensive as is the golly wog with the jam jars.
I can just say that the recipe now a days i think has changed- they are more sweeter.
But i do still like them -especially in a roll.
