Here's Microsoft Live Labs engineer Blaise Aguera y Arcas talking in March 2007 TED conference about some very cool upcoming technology called Seadragon and Photosynth.
The fun thing about Photosynth is that it can take disparate image data from, say, thousands of Flickr tagged-images, and stitch them together into one coherent, virtual model.
