In the Mathematical Lives of Plants post, astanhope left a link to this photo of a vegetable he snapped in Paris. It’s called Romanesco Broccoli {wiki} and the picture is well worth posting for everyone to see. Link to growing information. Link to a page about nature’s math where I found the name for it.

Also called Romanesco Cauliflower – previously mistaken by yours truly as a cabbage, way back when.

    Hi, i love your website!

I found someone selling these in the Union Square Market in NYC not too long ago and I bought one. I just stared at it for a while, and brought it around in a bag for my friends and family to see, its just so crazy looking.

Anyway, I finally got around to cooking it and it was delicious!! I chopped it up and broiled it for a bit with olive oil, salt and pepper. It tastes like a combination of broccoli and cauliflower, its very nutty. they’re great!

Huh. They’ve been around for years here. I like them with sauce hollandaise.

I first saw this cut up in a frozen vegetable mix where I mistook it for very strange mold. Luckily I have since learned better because it’s quite yummy :)

This is sold here in Spain both in big (which actually means HUGE, things can be the size of a bowling ball) and “snack” sizes (which is the size of a tennis ball or even less). It’s my favourite kind of caulliflower but it’s correct to say that you can be mesmerized just seeing. The patterns are actually beautiful. The taste is also very strong (in a good way, like concentrated broccoli with a touch of nut, and the texture once cooked is much softer and buttery).

“This just in!!… Famed Producer\playwrite\composer Albert Broccoli was arrested last evening while under the influence of psychodelic drugs. Tips phoned in to local authorities of sightings of funky appearance. News with photos at 11!”
