World’s Youngest Surfer?

Posted by Anita in Baby & Kids, World Records on April 9, 2007 at 10:25 pm

World's youngest surfer?

Jaylan Amor is only two years old, but is already surfing the waves outside of Brisbane, Australia and has secured multiple endorsements from surf shops.

To catch a wave, his dad paddles him out to sea, then the two year old hops and rides the waves back into shore. Mr Amor isn’t worried if Jaylan falls, as the tike just swims back to his board and waits for daddy to help him back up. Link [news.com.au] via DoubleViking.

Neatorama reader Lady Cooper wrote:

Todd Goliath of David and Goliath tees was recently caught directly stealing art from Dave Kelly (Shmorky on Something Awful). He didn’t just copy the image, he traced it! The full story is in the link, there’s already a well-dugg article, as well as on Metafilter.

Todd who? He’s the creator of "Boys Are Stupid, Throw Rocks at Them" t-shirt.

Darwin Monkey Business

Posted by yayo in Animals & Pets, Food & Drink, Science & Tech on April 9, 2007 at 7:40 pm

Darwin Monkey

“Anis del Mono” was (and still is today) a well known brand of anisette in Spain. The name translates to “Monkey Anisette.”

When Darwin came out with his (now proven) theory of evolution, the whole world made him to be a fool because he said that man and monkey share a common ancestor. Anis del Mono company owners, who apparently believed in the traditional views of things, changed the cute monkey in the original logo to a caricature of Charles Darwin. That modified logo remains until today.

Here’s a larger image of the rebranded label.

Michelle commented on the Joshua Bell post that Saw Lady had a busker’s response to the Washington Post article. I think you should read that article and more! Saw Lady is Natalia Paruz, who plays the musical saw in the New York subway system, and has appeared with some of the finest orchestras in the world. She writes on music, her musician friends, and life in New York City. You’ll also hear her music. Link to her blog. Link to her website. -Thanks, Michelle!

Formulating the Perfect Sandwich.

Posted by Miss Cellania in Food & Drink on April 9, 2007 at 11:30 am

According to The Sun, scientists have determined the precise formula for the perfect bacon sandwich. The research was done at Leeds university, where four scientists spent 1,000 hours testing over 700 varieties of bacon sandwiches. What a job.

The Formula

N = C + {fb(cm) . fb(tc)} + fb(Ts) + fc . ta

N = force in Newtons required to break the cooked bacon.
fb = function of the bacon type.
fc = function of the condiment/filling effect.
Ts = serving temperature.
tc = cooking time.
ta = time or duration of application of condiment/filling.
cm = cooking method.
C = Newtons required to break uncooked bacon.

Penguin on a Treadmill.

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets, Science & Tech, Video Clips on April 9, 2007 at 9:03 am

To add to our growing collection of “animals on treadmills” videos, here is a penguin on a treadmill. It may seem cruel, but it’s part of a legitimate experiment. Scientists at Birmingham University in England are studying penguins in the wild to see if they are undergoing increased stress do to global warming. Fifty penguins on the Crozet Islands, in the southern Indian Ocean were fitted with monitors to measure heart rate, breathing rate, and body temperature. Ten penguins in captivity are being used as control subjects, to study normal penguin metabolism. The scientists hope to determine whether the Crozet Island penguins are having to expend extra energy by traveling further than normal to find food. Push play or go to YouTube. Slovenian man swims the Amazon

Posted by Aleki in World Records on April 9, 2007 at 3:36 am

After 9 weeks and 3,272 miles of exhaustion, sunburn, delirium and piranhas, Martin Strel, a 52-year-old Slovenian, successfully completed a swim down the Amazon River.

That’s almost as long as the drive from Miami to Seattle.

It’s a good thing it wasn’t the Congo River.

Quake lifts Solomons island ten feet out of the sea

Posted by Aleki in Everything Else on April 9, 2007 at 3:18 am

In an instant, the grinding of the Earth’s tectonic plates in the 8.0 magnitude earthquake forced the island of Ranongga up ten feet.

It’s sad the fragile coral reef is going to die, but what a reminder of how powerful mother nature can be.
