Purses Fit for a Man?

Posted by Anita in Fashion, Pictures on March 28, 2007 at 10:41 pm

Purse looks like it contains a human head

American Inventor Spot has a list of 10 purses they claim to be manly enough that a guy wouldn’t feel embarrassed holding them. The purse above, created by Yael Mer to look like it contains a severed human head (eek!), is #9 on their list.

Strange Buildings in Asia.

Posted by Alex in Architecture, Travel on March 28, 2007 at 6:55 pm

Here’s a list of 5 spectacularly strange buildings in Asia. For example, the Ryugyong Hotel in Pyongyang, North Korea:

The Ryugyong Hotel is much like the North Korean regime itself: it’s monolithic, unstable, and menacing. Construction began on the building in 1987; it was abandoned in 1992, presumably because funding ran out. Perhaps due to bad concrete used in its initial construction, some think it’ll never be open as it’s currently designed. To this day, a crane sits at the top, 330 meters above Pyongyang, a dormant antenna perched on the half-built, ghostly hull. The edifice lacks windows, fixtures, and fittings; that it was never finished didn’t stop the government from adding it to maps and official currency, or from manipulating it in official images so that it appears to be lit up at night. Why would an isolationist state like North Korea—a country with perhaps the world’s tightest controls on tourism—undertake the construction of a hotel with 3,000 rooms? One can only guess.

Gum Recycling Bin.

Posted by Alex in Food & Drink on March 28, 2007 at 6:54 pm

Loredana and Ornella were walking downtown one day, when a gum thrown on the sidewalk ruined their shoes but sparked this idea for Envyrobubble, a gum recycling bin:

We did our homework and realized a public gum container would have to be designed specifically for gum, so we gave it a unique shape. It had to get attention and raise awareness of responsible gum disposal, so we covered it with a fun, eye-catching spiral design and made it scream bubble gum pink. Then we joined forces with a leading recycler to ensure that the gum collected became something useful: fertilizer.

This deep fryer doubles as a live goldfish tank. Since oil and water don’t mix, the hot oil stays on top and bits of food that fall down get eaten by the fishies!

Venn Diagram of the Secret of Happiness.

Posted by Alex in Everything Else on March 28, 2007 at 3:38 pm

This doodle by Lee of Lee’s Things blog summarizes secret to finding happiness:

In his lecture, Fournier suggested that these are three universal psychological needs (to be choiceful, connected to others, to feel capable) shared by all people and that all three are of equal importance. If these needs are not met, it will impact:

* our ability to meet our full potential
* our capacity to grow
* our ability to flourish and thrive
* our ability to experience happiness

7-Year-Old Boy Weighs 254 lb.!

Posted by Alex in Baby & Kids, Health on March 28, 2007 at 3:37 pm

A mother in Polk County, Florida, may lose custody of her 7-year-old son Justin, who weighs a staggering 254 lb. ( 115 kg)!

Joyce Painter’s seven year old son, Justin, weighs 254 pounds. She says the Department of Social Services is threatening to remove him from her home if he doesn’t lose weight.

Painter says she first noticed her son’s weight gain when he was three, "He played T-ball and soccer, did things just like every other kid, but he was gaining weight." Painter says she’s taken Justin to doctor after doctor over the past four years, but nobody has been able to pinpoint the cause of his rapid growth. She’s been told it could be genetic, it could be hormonal or it could be his diet. Painter says she’s regulated Justin’s meals for a while now, "I’ve got him on three meals a day. A meat and two vegetables, that’s it. There’s no snacking, I removed all the chips and cookies. I quit buying it." Despite those efforts, Painter says her son continues to gain weight.

Rolling Bridge.

Posted by Alex in Architecture, Pictures, Travel on March 28, 2007 at 3:37 pm

This awesome rolling bridge is made by Heatherwick Studio and is located in Paddington Basin, London, UK:

Rather than a conventional opening bridge mechanism, consisting of a single rigid element that lifts to let boats pass, the Rolling Bridge gets out of the way by curling up until its two ends touch. While in its horizontal position, the bridge is a normal, inconspicuous steel and timber footbridge; fully open, it forms a circle on one bank of the water that bears little resemblance to its former self.

Twelve metres long, the bridge is made in eight steel and timber sections, and is made to curl by hydraulic rams set into the handrail between each section.

Head Squishing in Ancient Peru.

Posted by Alex in Everything Else on March 28, 2007 at 12:59 pm

Don’t get the ancient Peruvian aristocrats angry: they’ll dismember you. But oddly, if they love you, they’ll squish your head!

While there is nothing pretty about dismemberment, one body also found at El Trigal displayed the ultimate of symbol of power and wealth in ancient Peru: a grossly cone-shaped skull.

Finding conehead individuals at El Trigal—achieved by binding the skull with bandages from a young age–is a bit of a mystery, said Castro-Martinez, since it was a practice usually reserved for babies of wealthy lineage and El Trigal was a lower-class community.

Inflatable Lunar Station.

NASA is testing an inflatable structure that one day might be used on the Moon!

The inflatable structure is made of multilayer fabric and looks like an ungainly white robot with legs. The main unit is 12 feet in diameter and 18 feet tall. It has a volume of about 1,600 cubic feet and is connected to an airlock, also inflatable. The two spaces are essentially pressurized cylinders, connected by an airtight door.

2.7 million yen in cash found floating down a river in Tokyo.

Posted by Excellent in Everything Else on March 28, 2007 at 12:52 pm

Police used fishing nets and their hands Wednesday to scoop up 2.7 million yen (US$23,000; €17,230) in mysterious cash floating down a Japanese river, an official said.

A passer-by notified police after seeing the bank notes drifting down the Sakai River on the border between Tokyo and Kanagawa prefecture, a Tokyo police official said on condition of anonymity, citing protocol.

Police managed to catch 270 soggy 10,000-yen (US$85; €64) bills, Japan’s biggest denomination, the official said.

Police are still investigating how and why the money was dumped.

Hexagon Spotted on Saturn.

Posted by Spluch in Pictures on March 28, 2007 at 8:09 am

Astronomers have spotted a hexagon-shaped feature on Saturn’s north pole.

“This is a very strange feature, lying in a precise geometric fashion with six nearly equally straight sides,” said Kevin Baines, atmospheric expert and member of Cassini’s visual and infrared mapping spectrometer team at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. “We’ve never seen anything like this on any other planet. Indeed, Saturn’s thick atmosphere, where circularly-shaped waves and convective cells dominate, is perhaps the last place you’d expect to see such a six-sided geometric figure, yet there it is.”

The hexagon is nearly 15,000 miles (25,000 kilometers) across. Nearly four Earths could fit inside it. The thermal imagery shows the hexagon extends about 60 miles (100 kilometers) down into the clouds.

Dog Saved Owner with Heimlich Maneuver.

Posted by Alex in Animals & Pets, Health on March 28, 2007 at 3:00 am

When Debbie Parkhurst, 45, was home alone and choked on an apple, her dog came to her rescue by performing a Heimlich maneuver!

“It was lodged pretty tight because I couldn’t breathe,”
she said. “I tried to do the thing where you lean over a chair and give yourself the Heimlich, but it didn’t work.”

Parkhurst said she then began beating her chest, an action that might have attracted Toby’s attention.

“The next think I know, Toby’s up on his hind feet and he’s got his front paws on my shoulders,” she recalled. “He pushed me to the ground, and once I was on my back, he began jumping up and down on my chest.”

Toby’s jumping apparently managed to dislodge the apple from Parkhurst’s windpipe.

“As soon as I started breathing, he stopped and began licking my face, as if to keep me from passing out,” she said.
