Via Tokyo Times. We used to call  the single-story American version of this a shotgun house because you "could fire a shotgun through the front door and the pellets would fly cleanly through the house and out the back door." (See Wikipedia article)

    My brother lived in a house like this in LA. It was a narrow, triangle-shaped thing that had been crammed onto the last piece of land on the block. We called it the "cheese-wedge house."
