Zany Brazilian prank videos
What better way to spend a winter evening than looking at kooky Brazilian prank videos?
In the video above [YouTube] the men in the box are chanting “curious” to lure their victims in.
Here are several other clips from the same show:
I love the fact that almost to a person, the prank victims in these videos usually end up striking or throwing something at the pranksters. There are many more, but they aren’t terribly funny if you can’t understand Portuguese.
Bonus video (different show): Remote-controlled skeleton on a motorbike [YouTube]

Open a Beer Bottle with a Dollar Bill.
I was always intrigued when guys in college would open beers with lighters, their hands (often bloodied afterwards), other beer bottles, tables, and their teeth. However, I never saw anyone open a beer with a dollar bill. Hit play or go to Link [metacafe]

Feeling You're Being Followed? It's All In Your Head.
Ever feel that you’re being shadowed? The paranoia and feeling of being followed may just be your brain misfiring:
The paper, published in the British journal Nature, describes the case of a 22-year-old woman with no history of psychiatric problems who was being evaluated for treatment of epilepsy. When a region of her brain called the left temporoparietal junction was electrically stimulated, the woman described encounters with a ‘shadow person’ who mimicked her bodily movements.
Living in a Really Narrow House.
Helenita, the woman in yellow, designed and live in this 1 meter (about 3.3 feet) wide by 10 meter tall house in Madre de Deus, Brazil.
The kitchen look suspiciously larger than 1 m wide, but the story seems legit!

"Wingman" Helps Alpha Male Bird Gets the Girl.
Dominant male lance-tailed manakin has a "wingman" that helps him get the girl:
Instead of fighting over females, pairs of male lance-tailed manakins team up to court prospective mates. Two males dance together for interested females, using tightly synchronized ‘leapfrog’ and flight displays to impress the opposite sex. But when the dance is over, only the dominant male, the alpha, gets the chance to mate.
Turns out, being the beta male has its benefits. Emily DuVal of UC Berkeley’s Museum of Vertebrate Zoology did the research:
Following males across years showed that betas became alphas more often than other males, but not necessarily at the same territory where they were betas. Even when the local alpha slot was empty, some betas moved to be helpers elsewhere rather than take over the vacant position. "Without being an alpha, there’s essentially no chance for these males to reproduce," says DuVal. "My results suggest that betas could actually benefit from staying betas for a while, for example by gaining courtship skills during a sort of apprenticeship or by forming alliances with other males who later act as their betas."

Hello Kitty Wedding.

Neatorama reader Joe Hastings wrote:
I walk past this every day on my way home from work. It is located in the Hong Kong MTR (underground/subway/metro) station and it is constantly surrounded by people taking photographs. I figured I would join the crowds and get some snaps of this monstrosity. Worse than being some creepy addition to the universe of Hello Kitty crap across the world, an actual, legal, marriage has taken place here.
Turns out the first ever legally valid subway Hello Kitty Dream Wedding was held in February 2007:

Witnessed by relatives, friends and MTR passengers, bridegroom Jamie and his bride Horlick with their bridesmaids and groomsmen, boarded the first-ever MTR Hello Kitty Wedding Train and headed towards to MTR Hong Kong Station. The wedding train was specially designed for the occasion with images of Hello Kitty and Dear Daniel dressed as little cupids covering the train body and compartments. The interior was decorated with flowers and ribbons in the grandest and most romantic fashion.

Bird Can Save for a Rainy Day.

Photo: Ian Cannell & Caroline Raby
Turns out "bird brain" isn’t so stupid after all: western scrub jays can plan for the future by storing snacks when they detect that food will be in short supply in the near future.
Nicola Clayton of the University of Cambridge and her colleagues set out to test whether scrub-jay birds could plan for a future need as opposed to a current one. On alternate mornings for six days, eight scrub jays experienced one of two compartments. In one compartment, the birds were always given breakfast, and in the other they were not.
In the evening, after this training period, the scientists allowed the birds to feast freely on pine nuts, which are suitable for hoarding. The birds planned for a breakfast-free morning by hiding much more food in the bare compartment compared with the “breakfast” one. The prudent squirreling away reveals an understanding of future needs, the researchers say.
