Chill a Beer or Soda in Under a Minute.

Tinchilla chills beer in under a minute

Need a cold soda or beer quick? The Tinchilla will cool any canned drink in a minute or less. Just insert two AA batteries, ice, water, and your favorite beverage to get an ice-cold drink delivered up to 240 times faster than a fridge.

Seem unbelievable? I thought so, but here’s how one retailer describes the physics:

The Tinchilla is a simple device which utilizes the scientific principle of thermal conduction. By spinning the can at an optimised speed the metal of the can is rapidly chilled by exposing its surface to the ice cubes and water surrounding it. The spinning can is also given a slight wobble resulting in a whirlpool effect inside. This whirpool allows as much of the drink as possible to be exposed to the now chilled surface of the can thus rapidly transferring the heat from inside to the surrounding water and ice.

Pretty neat for only ~$10. Link via TechEBlog

Or you can soak it in a solution of ice water and salt, if a bucket of liquid nitrogen is not handily available! Of course you'll have to fish it out carefully...

I had one of those 15 years ago. Not bad if you don't mind using 2AA batteries for every can you cool :|

I am personally a fan of icewater soak to cool a can quickly.

Ummm, if the can of soda is spun rapidly, wouldn't it foam all over whoever opens it???

wtm - apparently, at least according to the manufacturer, the can is spun slowly enough that it doesn't foam or explode. I'm half tempted to buy one, or maybe I'll just take the cheap route and use a bucket like Alex suggests.

Or you could just pour your drink into an ice filled cup... well for a soda anyways.

I always "roll my own". I heard about this device some years ago, and now I use my fingers to "tickle" a can into rolling on its long axis in a bed of ice water.

my mom got one of these around 15 years ago-- I think i used it the most until it got pitched. It worked ok-- but it was more a waste of space-- works just as effectively as leaving the can in the freezer for 5 minutes, if I recall correctly.

I just put a can in an icechest and spin it myself for about a minute. Bottle work too. Then to decrease the fizz on a can, just tap the top of the can about five or six times before opening.
