Fifty States in Ten Minutes

Can you name all 50 states without consulting a map? I admit I consulted the map in my head as I did this quiz from Ironic Sans. You have ten minutes from page load to type in all 50 states. Yes, spelling counts. I did it in just over four minutes. It would have been much faster except I skipped Nevada and had to search my mental map for it. Link -via Metafilter

Thirteen Towers.

The mystery of the Thirteen Towers of Chankillo has been solved completely:

A line of 13 stone towers discovered on a hillside in Peru forms part of an ancient solar observatory that had a major role in society centuries before the Incas, scientists say.

The 2300-year-old site, the oldest in the Americas, points to a sophisticated culture that used the dramatic alignment of the Sun and the structures for political and ceremonial effects, the researchers write today in the journal Science.

The site, called the Thirteen Towers of Chankillo, precisely spans the annual rising and setting arcs of the Sun when viewed from two specially constructed observation points.

Animals Yawning

Prairie dogs

A big collection of photographs of animals yawning, sorted by species. Some are really cute, some are quite frightful… A snake mouth is not funny at all even when it’s yawning!

Bad boy of art Damien Hirst’s [wiki] new artwork looks like an ornately done stainglass, but upon closer look, it’s made out of thousands and thousands of butterfly wings!

This one above is called Aubade, Crown of Glory 2006. Link | Another one

Mutant Monsters Biology.

Godzilla interiors

Everything you’ve ever wanted to know about the real biology of Godzilla and other monsters, now explained with cutout illustrations:

Most of the current research efforts are geared towards a better understanding of Godzilla’s digestion system which appears to provide him with energy from nuclear materials with little nuclear waste. An understanding of this process could revolutionize the world! Of course, there is also much military research geared towards the production of a Godzilla-breath-like weapon. Such a weapon would have fantastic destructive capabilities that could strike targets much faster and cheaper than conventional projectile type weapons such as bombs and missles.

Pay to Stay: Upgraded Jail.

Posted by Alex in Crime & Law on March 3, 2007 at 2:05 pm

Jail is no picnic, but it can be a lot nicer if you’re willing to pay a bit extra:

Pay to stay can be summer camp compared with state prison. A criminal who can afford to pay for his jail stay enjoys privileges that make his punishment more bearable.

For starters, Jaramillo may be able to bring his cellphone and a laptop computer. A screenwriter who paid to do his brief sentence in Fullerton was able to finish his screenplay on his laptop, said jailer Efren Ragay. …

Jaramillo will also be allowed family visits in a patio in front of the police station, where he can enjoy restaurant meals that visitors can bring him. Otherwise it is frozen dinners from the microwave. The cost to be the city’s guest is $75 per day. Usually, the entire sum is payable in advance, but because of Jaramillo’s longer sentence he will probably be able to pay in installments, said Lt. John Petropulos.
