Al Gore's Own Inconvenient Truth: He Uses Lots of Electricity!

After Al Gore’s documentary film "An Inconvenient Truth" won an Oscar last week, Tennessee Center for Policy Research, a conservative think tank, blasted him as an environmental hypocrite and pointed out that Al Gore wasn’t as green as his image:
From ABC News:
Armed with Gore’s utility bills for the last two years, the Tennessee Center for Policy Research charged Monday that the gas and electric bills for the former vice president’s 20-room home and pool house devoured nearly 221,000 kilowatt-hours in 2006, more than 20 times the national average of 10,656 kilowatt-hours. …
The Center claims that Nashville Electric Services records show the Gores in 2006 averaged a monthly electricity bill of $1,359 for using 18,414 kilowatt-hours, and $1,461 per month for using 16,200 kilowatt-hours in 2005. During that time, Nashville Gas Company billed the family an average of $536 a month for the main house and $544 for the pool house in 2006, and $640 for the main house and $525 for the pool house in 2005. That averages out to be $29,268 in gas and electric bills for the Gores in 2006, $31,512 in 2005.

The blogosphere was abuzz, as it is wont to do, about this: The conservatives pointed out that Al Gore uses twice the electricity in one month than the average household does in an entire year. (I haven’t done the math myself).
The left shot back, saying "oh yeah, that’s nothing compared to Dick Cheney’s $186,000 electricity bill, which the US Navy footed."

Busted Hard Disk? Buyer Beware!
From Consumerist, a cautionary tale about going to Geek Squad’s repair contract:
Seven days later, they hadn’t even looked at the machine. After 8 days, they’d begun testing the laptop. On the 10th day the exhaustive tests were still being done, but things weren’t looking good for O.’s data files. On the 11th day, O. was given the sad news that his hard drive was fried and would need to be replaced for an extra charge of $118.00. On the 12th day, O. was given his laptop, and his non-working hard drive.

Broken Ice Shelves Revealed New Antarctic Underwater Species.

Photo: J. Gutt/Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research
Yay for global warming! When a large ice shelf broke up due to global warming, scientists got a glimpse of a pristine ocean floor, which had been sealed off from the world for thousands of years.
This ice fish above is well-adapted to the cold polar water:
As an adaptation to the extreme cold of polar waters, the fish has no red blood cells. This makes its blood more fluid, so that the animal can save energy otherwise needed to pump blood through its body.

Clap your tentacles is a cover version of the classic tune Papa’s got a brand new bag.
Nice and raw with decent production. The Happy Monsters appear to be on lead vocals: Klaxons, bells, squeaks and parps are strewn all over the top of the final mix, making the whole thing rather comical.

The Midlife Crisis Car Goes Green.

One of the drawbacks to the widespread use of electric cars has been that they’re usually pretty ugly. The Tesla Roadster will change that perception. It runs on 100% electricity, for 250 miles per charge at about a penny per mile. Plus it goes from zero to 60mph in about 4 seconds. These cars are sold out now, but reservations are being taken for the 2008 models. Link -via Dump Trumpet

Granny Finds Grenade in Groceries.
From Yahoo News:
A 74-year-old Italian grandmother who bought a sack of potatoes at the her local market found a live grenade among the spuds.
“I went to the market to buy some potatoes and that’s where the bomb was. But this bomb was covered in dirt, and I put it in water and got all dirt off. And then I realized ‘It’s a bomb’!”
To the woman’s relief, police and explosives experts in the small town of San Giorgio a Cremano, near Naples, recovered the grenade and safely detonated it on Wednesday.
The Kobe Testujin Project.
After suffering heavy damage in the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995, Kobe City’s Nagata Ward has managed to rebuild and recover quite well. To celebrate its revival, Nagata Ward is planning to erect a statue of one of Kobe’s local heroes, the anime robot Testujin 28 [Gigantor]. The statue will cost 135 million yen (about 1.1 million US dollars) to build, 45 million of which the city government has promised to provide. Local citizens are collecting donations for the project. If completed the statue will rise to a height of 18 meters, which is about the same as a 5 story apartment building.

Scrape those ears clean!
Japan Probe writes: Am I the only person a little grossed-out by a news feature in which a reporter approaches people on the street and asks men to show her their ear wax scrapers? The reporter also visits a store to see the latest in ear cleaning technology, and then shows us some relaxing ear cleaning salons. Nothing beats putting your head on the lap of a yukata-clad young woman as she scraps the gunk out of your ears!
