Sorry to be pedantic, but “Tonight, when you watch the 79th Academy Awards tonight…” only needs one ‘tonight’.

Just a nitpick but Stanley Kubrick did in fact win an Oscar for Best Visual Effects in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Not the award for Best Director or Best Film that he deserves, shame, but it is still competitive and it does have his name on it.

Not to be a jerk, but that streaker in ‘74 was actually well-hung.

It wasn’t always so, where the winners had to sign a paper promising not to sell their Oscars.

Harold Russell, born in Sidney, Nova Scotia, was famous for being the only person to win two Oscars for the same role.

He starred in “The Best Years of Our Lives”, as a sailor who lost both hands in the war. Russell was qualified for this role due to the fact that he had lost both his hands working as a munitions expert in the war.

Now there’s a neat fact for you.

    According to Wikipedia,

In 1992, Russell needed money for his wife’s medical expenses. In a controversial decision, he sold his Oscar to a private collector for $60,500. Russell defended his action, saying: “I don’t know why anybody would be critical. My wife’s health is much more important than sentimental reasons. The movie will be here, even if Oscar isn’t.” The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences now requires all Oscar recipients to sign an agreement forbidding them from selling their award.

If anyone knows the current where abouts of the streaker I would love to know - please post. Does he have regrets of the incident? Was he arrested?

What’s the “s” word Samuel L. Jackson used? And what’s the “m” word?!?

I’m just part of the 80% of america that doesn’t care what awards hollywood gives each other.

When they start letting us vote, the results would be a lot different.

I’m with you, Jimbo. I don’t even HAVE a TV, and I rarely watch blockbuster movies. Can’t stand most celebrities or the Hollywood scene, so the Oscars are a waste of my time.

The Opel story was funny though… *snicker*

I Worked with a guy in the late 80’s, early 90’s in California who used to buy stuff from storage places that people didn’t pay they would auction off their stuff. And he had three Oscars he claimed he got that way. One was for gone with the wind. I never heard any thing about them or have I seen this person since the 90’s. Any one know anything about this?
