My son started looking at web design software last year when he was 5 and taught himself how to use it, he had his website online when he was 5 yrs and 9 months old. He updates it all the time and tries out new ideas on it (some of which work and some don’t) but for a child who’s had no formal teaching at all I think he’s done OK.

I’d be interested to know if this 8 year old still holds the record…if so I’d say my son has beaten it!

Yeah, it isn’t the greatest site in the world by far, but for an 8 year old, pretty good!

However, I don’t think those crappy GIF candles are any good!

And in response to ted, the only part of html she would have needed to know was maybe that marquee thing saying she designed it, otherwise, everything else could have been made just by using dreamweaver.

If you look at the code, she has used META tags for everything, in the style tags, not CSS.

I don’t know where she got the design from, but if you look at the source code, she used Front Page. Front Page requires NO knowledge of HTML code. Zero. Zip. Nada. Rien.

It looks a lot like a template. Impressive enough for an 8-yr-old, I suppose. But worthy of note around the world? Not really.

I disagree with Nicholas – there are many other websites that are aesthetically beautiful but much less practical than Sreelakhsmi’s. Her design is clean and very functional.

I started programming when I was 8, and taught myself out of a BASIC command reference manual. I got interested because I saw my dad throw together a quick program to help my sister solve anagrams. Once we got the internet, I was able to start working in better languages, but my experience from learning to optimize code and algorithms so things would run quickly in interpreted basic is what makes me a good programmer today.

Yeah, what Denita said. This little girl is on track for a decent career as a web geek. I’d love to see what she’s up to in 10-15 years.

I’ve got an 8 year-old son, and most any computer time he has is spent in lame online arcade games. I’d absolutely love for him to be even moderately interested in the code that makes the games or the pages work. Most days he can be found running around the house with his Bionicles making battle noises.

Yeah, it is ridiculous to plaster all over the website that it was designed by her as well. The site isn’t even close to great, much less functional. Her attention to detail is non existent, and it looks more like a template layout much more than a design catered to the school.

I’d like to see some of her other work though.

Awards for that? It’s impressive for an 8 year old and doesn’t have many major problems but there are many things that could be improved (fixed width design, menu placement, scrolling ticker).

8 Years old? Impressive! I’m 13 and I have done quite a lot of websites for others but not when I was 8!
