If I'm not mistaken, those purple potatoes are not in fact the result of any radiation experiment or space travel. They are called Blue Kongo (Blå Kongo) and are sold in many grocery stores where I live (Sweden). They have been grown in this country since sometime in the thirties. They make a very interesting mash, or a cool potato sallad with some yellow or white ones.

I think there must be different kinds of purple potatoes as well. I just had my first purple skinned sweet potatoes. They looked like normally coloured potatoes on the inside, tasted like creamy yams, and had a thick purple skin. Really Yummy.

BTW--Speaking of "eyes", someone in China is pulling the (purple?) wool over the collective peepers of the populace. The "mutated space potato" claim is complete bunk. I've been eating these for almost ten years, they're a common sight at the Central Market in Austin!

YUM! I love purple spuds! They're a little creamier than standard spuds, and they mash quite nicely. I've even made them up as a classic potato salad--very eye-catching at a big picnic!

Ummm, last I heard purple potatoes arn't the result of some space experiment. They occure naturally i.e. without radiation...

They were actually on the Discovery Channel series Dirty Jobs, when Mike Rowe worked on a potatoe farm.

At my brother's wedding reception they had mashed potato cocktails (think shrimp cocktails) with either white or purple potatoes. The one person that I found who was brave enough to try both said they tasted basically the same however.

man ive been buying purple potatoes at the local loblaws ( canada ) for years. they taste exactly the same as regular potatoes but since they seem a little softer they make for great baked french fries.

my own recipie
------------------
cut up some of the pruple potatoes or yams
drizzle them in a bit extra virigin olive oil ( enough to give them a very thin coating )
add a bit of salt / pepper
add a bit of oregano
throw on a baking sheet
put oven at 375C and let them cook until nice and soft or crispy ( usually between 20-30 minutes )
