Stretching Cures Hiccups.

Posted by Alex in Medicine on February 4, 2007 at 3:27 pm

Do you get hiccups frequently? Opiniorama shares a method to stop hiccups quickly (in case you don’t have a spoonful of peanut butter!):

I decided to do a little stretching while holding my breath so placed my hands above my door frame and leaned forward, and what do you know within seconds the hiccups stopped. You should feel an arch to your back and your abdomen stretching. Continue to push your hands upwards and let the weight of your body send you through the door frame. Maintain this stretched position for 30-60 seconds while holding a big breath.

Washington' Farewell Address -translated!

Posted by Miss Cellania in Everything Else on February 4, 2007 at 8:03 am

Randall Munroe at the wonderful blog xkcd took George Washington’s Farewell Address of 1796 and painstakingly translated each point into 21st century American English. He said the process was “fun, depressing, inspiring, and a little bit spooky.” The results are amazingly easy to read and understand. The advice Washington had for the nation is still valid today. Romanian President: We Owe It All to Piracy.

Posted by Alex in Crime & Law on February 4, 2007 at 1:21 am

When he met Bill Gates, Romanian President Traian Basescu [wiki] basically said that the country built its IT industry based on pirated Microsoft softwares!

Basescu said, during a joint news conference with Gates, that piracy helped the younger generation discover computers. It set off the development of the IT industry in Romania.

It also helped Romanians improve their creative capacity in the IT industry, which has become famous around the world. He claimed that all this piracy "ten years ago" was an investment in Romania’s friendship with Microsoft and with Bill Gates.

Posted by Alex in Food & Drinks on February 4, 2007 at 1:20 am

Who makes the best coffee: Starbucks, McDonald’s, Burger King, or Dunkin’ Donuts? Consumer Reports did a taste test and found out that (surprise!) it wasn’t Starbucks!

The magazine proclaimed McDonald’s Premium Roast Coffee had "no flaws" and was easiest on the wallet. "Try McDonald’s, which was cheapest and best," Consumer Reports says in its March issue. "Or make your own coffee."

The World's Safest Table Saw

Posted by Anita in Gadget, Video Clips on February 4, 2007 at 12:02 am

Every year, over 60,000 people are injured, often severely, by table saws. To prevent these injuries, SawStop has developed a revolutionary table saw that virtually eliminates the risk of losing a finger. To see what happens when the blade hits a simulated finger (a hot dog), push play or see this link [youtube].

I actually had a friend in high school lose two fingers on a table saw during shop class, it’s a shame they didn’t sell something like this back then.
