Posted by Alex in Fashion, Pictures on February 28, 2007 at 10:43 pm

Dutch artist Felieke van der Leest made some very creative jewelry, like the trapeze artist duck necklace, cockroach wearing a sweater brooch, and lemur necklace. But my favorite is this one:

… a young bird "wearable object" for men’s suits! Link

Botanicalls: Plants to Call You When They Need Water.

Posted by Alex in Everything Else on February 28, 2007 at 4:01 pm

The Botanicalls project, created by Kate Hartman, Kati London, Rebecca Bray, and Rob Faludi at the ITP program at New York University, lets your plants call you when they need to be watered!

Botanicalls allows thirsty plants to place phone calls for human help. When a plant on the botanicalls network needs a lot or a little water, it can call a human and ask for exactly what it needs.

When humans phone the plants, the plants orient callers to their habits and characteristics, including how they like to be watered and cared for. Call 212.202.8348 to hear more about each of the plants.

Botanicalls opens a new channel of communication between plants and humans, in an effort to promote successful inter-species cohabitation and understanding.

After trying for 30 minutes to bring two-week-old Woody Lander back to life, doctors decided there was nothing more they could do and called in his parents to say their tearful farewells.
A nurse passed Woody to his heartbroken father and gently pulled a tube from his mouth so they could kiss him goodbye. It was then that the miracle happened. The lifeless baby suddenly coughed and moved. Nurses immediately grabbed Woody back, re-attached the tubes and lifesaving equipment and he came back to life in front of his astonished parents.

Self-Assembling Battery.

Posted by Alex in Everything Else on February 28, 2007 at 12:49 pm

MIT material science professor Yet-Ming Chiang and colleagues have designed electrode and electrolyte materials can assemble themselves into useful structures, like a battery.

"Ultimately, the goal is just to chuck a bunch of stuff into a bucket and have it self-assemble into a battery," says Jeff Dahn, professor of chemistry and physics at Dalhousie University, in Canada. Chiang’s work creating a prototype self-assembling battery is "really nice science," Dahn says. "Just the fact that you can do it is pretty cool."

Remote Controlled Pigeon.

Posted by Alex in Animal on February 27, 2007 at 11:33 pm

Chinese scientists at the Shadong University of Science and Tech can now command a pigeon’s flight through remote control:

Scientists sent signals by computer to the implants that mirror signals generated by the brain to control body movement. These signals stimulate different areas of the pigeon’s brain and cause it to respond to the command, the researchers said.

Chief scientist Su Xuecheng said it is the first such successful experiment on a pigeon in the world.
