Dr Trevor Cox, professor of acoustic engineering at Salford University is trying to find out what makes annoying sounds so horrible … the best thing is, you can vote for the worst sound ever:
Fingernails scraping down a blackboard… the scream of a baby… your neighbour’s dog barking: what is the worst sound in the world? This is what this website has been trying to find out.
Acoustic science is concerned with the production, transmission, manipulation and reception of sound, from unwanted traffic noise to beautiful music. Acoustics is about both the physical properties of sound waves and the reaction of humans. This website is interested in the often complex ways in which people perceive and interpret sounds. The aim is to increase awareness of sound psychology by examining what makes a sound unpleasant to hear. Your votes on the site will also give us an insight into what is the worst sound in the world, and maybe why it is the worst sound.
Some of them are unbearable … The dentist’s drill makes me think of Steve Martin.

Operation Plumbbob [wiki] was a series of nuclear tests conducted in 1957 in the desert of Nevada – it was the biggest and longest (not to mention most controversial) nuclear weapons test series in the US.
The military was interested in knowing how the average foot-soldier would stand up, physically and psychologically, to the rigors of the tactical nuclear battlefield.
Studies were conducted of radiation contamination and fallout from a simulated accidental detonation of a weapon; and projects concerning earth motion, blast loading and neutron output were carried out.
Not surprisingly, as part of the test, the military was also interested in finding out whether blimps could be used to carry nuclear weapons!

Neatorama reader Tahir wrote about a new art project going on at Urban Retro:
The new project is called ‘The Mouse vs. The Brush’ . The basis of this project is simple. We want to explore the difference between computer based art and traditional forms of creating art. 2 artists go head to head and create an art print using either the mouse or the paint brush. The art will then be sold as 50 Limited Edition Art prints along with 100 Sets of 4 button badges produced by each artist
In the first part of this project we have Ben the Illustrator using the mouse and Lou Pimentel using the Brush. We chose these 2 artists as they both have a bold and colourful style of art and their characters (Ben’s Speakerdog and Lou’s Cherry) make for a perfect friendly battle. Both artists are young up and coming artists with great talent.
Here they are: The Mouse, by Ben the Illustrator:

And the Brush, by Lou Pimentel:

Paul Schmelzer, as signed by Dan Castellaneta (the voice of Homer Simpson, Barney Gumble, Mayor Quimby and other Simpsons characters)
Paul Schmelzer collects autographs, but not your usual kind. The story went like this:
Many years ago, my then-8-year-old friend Spencer asked a prominent jazz musician for an autograph, but when he was given the usual signature, he scolded, "Not your name… Mine!" Following his lead, I’ve been asking writers, artists, politicians, and movie stars to sign my John Hancock, er, Paul Schmelzer. So far more than 70 have agreed…

From the website:
A Dutchman dressed as the unpredictable master criminal The Joker from Batman managed to get himself a national ID card, despite supposedly stringent new rules which outlaw grins, funny faces, and head coverings from passport pics.
… a 35-year-old man from the Dutch town of Hellevoetsluis decided to paint his face black and dress up as Batman’s goofy trickster-thief rival and was astounded that his new appearance was accepted without a hitch. Initially, the man was asked not to wear a hat, but when he argued it was because of religious beliefs, he was allowed to leave it on.
The incident has stirred quite a controversy among Dutch politicians. Interior minister Johan Remkes now has to explain how this could have happened. "We don’t think there are many people dressed up as clowns in this country," his department said.

Declan Purcell was tired of his bank charging him massive fees, so he took it to court and won by default when the bank didn’t show up. When the bank refused to pay, he gave the bank a taste of their own medicine – he sent in the bailiffs to seize the bank’s assets!
When Royal Bank of Scotland refused to refund £3,400 charges that Declan Purcell believed he was owed, he sent in the bailiffs.
Stunned customers at his branch of RBS watched as debt collectors seized four computers, two fax machines and a till filled with cash.
The branch manager was told that the items would be sold unless RBS came up with the money owed to Mr Purcell. …
Mr Purcell said: "I think the bank was pretty shocked when the bailiffs went in. But my view is that this is exactly what they would have done to me."
