I have one, with the pin in the center and have been guessing about it fot years. It does fit an old drill bit I have. I did use it to make some interesting copper conchos against a urethane block

It’s a logging maul and was used by lumberjacks to mark the cut ends of logs before they were sent downriver. Different logging companies had different marks, like “brands”…mauls were more effective than hot brands for marking the logs because a log “rustler” could just saw the branded end off the log. A heavy swing of the maul on the end of the log would drive the points into the wood about a half inch, but the impact would mark the wood grain several inches into the wood, like a sound wave. Then even if the end were sawn off, a light scorching of the wood would reveal the owner’s mark…like invisible ink!

I’m going to guess that its a ‘bush hammer’. Bush hammers are used in masonry to texturize stone and concrete.

This is not technically a hammer, but is struck by a hammer (sledge). It is used to reshape, while hot, the working end of a drill rod used in the ground and stone, etc.
Some have a pin in the center to line up on the airhole in drill rods that are used in rock and have an airhole running their length.

Hmmm… I’m going to guess that it would be used by a blacksmith for some sort of shaping task (and would probably have a corresponding die to go with it. I’m just not sure what the resulting pieces might be used for…
