Skyguard Laser

A land-based laser that can target incoming warheads and projectiles:

Suddenly I’m remembering the Eighties-era “Star Wars” Strategic Defense Initiative again…and how everyone mocked it at the time. Hmm…

There are some interesting articles about this system at wikipedia and Popular Science. Costs $150 million and despite the field setting its main purpose is defending airports, because of the massive power supply required.

One must also remember that (judging by the background music and glowing script) this was made by the manufacturer. One can only guess at how accurate this really is.
    Nifty?…yes.
    Perfect?…maybe not so much.

Even if it isn’t as picture perfect as the promo video, this seems like something that is worth the investment militarily and scientificly.

There are so many technologies that have their birth thanks to the enormous budget the US military is given.

I sometimes wonder what kind of world we would have if not for the Cold War which forced two super powers into a fierce competition for technological supremecy.

It is absolutely outstanding that we have such a defense mechanism. The power issue is the biggest downfall though…

We’d have our flying cars for a start.

Far more technologies weren’t birthed because of the wasted resources. Also considering all the inventions attributed to NASA which they didn’t invent (everything from velcro to microwave ovens) I wouldn’t trust any list of technologies “birth thanks to the enormous budget the US military is given”.
