Why didn't someone make pancakes? Or waffles? Or toffee? or Drop Cookies? So sad
So many wasted opportunities for capitalistic gain. They could have put it into ice cube trays, providing someone had invented ice cube trays, and stuck sticks into each cube and invented the Boston Pops. Wonder why little Artie Fielder didn't think of that?

They could have sold it to Miss Fannie May and she could have created the Walnetto and then the FM Turtle with just some chocolate and a few nuts like me.

They could have saved some for Bush and Cheney, and with some feathers given them a ride on the Rail Road, splinters and all, that they deserved.

And finally, they could have distilled the molasses into a fine liqueur and sold it to the Benedictine Monks who were looking for new sources of income--calling it B & M, or just BM for short. The lead slogan could have been: "There is nothing like a great BM morning, noon and night to make your day!"

A very interesting item. I had read about this several years ago online, and then found the book, "Dark Tide: The Great Boston Molasses Flood of 1919" by Stephen Puleo and bought and read it. An incredible story. Puleo also indicates that the molasses was actually kept for alcohol that was being used in military munitions. The saga contains a lot of great details and photos about a tragic event.

It's hard to imagine such a slow and sticky substance being so deadly-swift in large quantities. But I remember reading about this a while ago, and the pictures of the aftermath were terrifying. I wonder how many survivors swore off the stuff afterwards...?

The second worst disaster (based on my limited scope of knowledge regarding molasses), happened just a few months ago. Mix a rambunctious 2 year old, a pint of molasses, and hardwood floors ... and you have a disaster in the making. Took HOURS to clean up.

I recall a molasses-related incident in Delft, The Netherlands in 1999, where I lived at the time (http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4153/is_19990729/ai_n11902835). But I doubt it'll qualify for second place.

I live in Boston and they say that on summer days you can still smell the molasses. Although I think that is just an urban myth. I haven't smelled it.
