Giant Squid Captured on Film.

Posted by Alex in Animal on December 22, 2006 at 2:01 pm

A Japanese research team filmed a live giant squid (although it died while it was being caught):

The research team, led by Tsunemi Kubodera, videotaped the giant squid at the surface as they captured it off the Ogasawara Islands south of Tokyo, earlier this month. The squid, which measured about seven metres long, died while it was being caught.

"We believe this is the first time anyone has successfully filmed a giant squid that was alive," said Kubodera, a researcher with Japan’s National Science Museum. "Now that we know where to find them, we think we can be more successful at studying them in the future."

Is anybody else kind of disturbed that nobody seems particularly concerned that they -killed- this creature in their attempt to catch it? The phrase "died while it was being caught" seems to be rather grossly avoiding responsibility ...

You won't believe how happy this made me. We can start worshiping them, now that they're out in the open! Saving them! Everything! Am sad to see that one die, though. Perhaps I'll start knitting poormojo's squid hat in memory of it...
