In our circle of families and friends, we have begun to change the gift-giving rules for our kids' birthday parties. Rather than spend 20 bucks on yet another Lego set or vidoe game or whateever that the birthday child doesn't need, together as parents we've begun to ask kids to donate money toward a charity instead.
This has caught on in a big way -- our kids have raised over $400 for various charities (including Heifer International and Doctors Without Borders) by doing this.
Of course, our kids still get some birthday presents within the family -- but we are helping them learn about giving, about being satisifed with enough, as well as passing on a great gift to others.
I encourage other parents concerned about excess consumerism to try this with their kids. It works! And the kids feel great about it!

Thanks for the kind words about Heifer International and your effort to fund an ark. I joined Heifer as new media director last year and really appreciate it when someone blogs about us.

We have a new BlogRaising program that might make your fundraising effort easier and smother. It lets bloggers like you help us get the word out about Heifer and raise the money we need to do our work all throgugh their blog. To learn more, just go to www.heifer.org/onlinecommunityfundraising

Again thanks for the good words.

In Denmark, one of the major charities has just released "give a goat": http://givenged.dk - you can give a goat, a cow, 200 condoms, a bee swarm ... The thing is delivered in Malawi, Kirghistan or elsewhere and you get a nice card to present to the givee (is that a word?).

Great mission! I like the idea of providing long-term food to people, instead of just thinking about the present.
