Teenager Took Bus on Joyride, Picked up Passengers.

Posted by Alex in Crime & Law on October 30, 2006 at 2:34 am

Fifteen-year-old teenager Ritchie Calvin Davis stole a bus and drove it along its route, picking up passengers and collecting fares:

"I drove that bus better than most of the LYNX drivers could," the teen told a deputy after his arrest. "There isn’t a scratch on it. I know how to start it, drive it, lower it, raise it."

Passengers and deputies noted Davis drove the bus at normal speeds and made all the appropriate stops on the route. One passenger, suspicious of the youthful looks of the driver, called 911.

This is rather reminiscent of something that happened in Melbourne last year:

At least he didn't set it on fire.

It's an urban legend. I know this story for at least 20 years. Mostly it is like this: Kid, underaged, steals [any form of public transport], drives the whole route without damage or passangers noticing.

Is it still an urban legend if it's true, Bart?

No, it is not an urban legend when it is true. Maybe the kid did exactly the same thing as the kid in the urban legend. That would be nice. But then, it would not be the first time the police or any other official authority would help spreading an urban legend.

Question: you said a passenger called 911- what was the bus company doing? Did they not know?
