That Was Me: Background Strangers in Photo.

Posted by Alex in Everything Else, Pictures on October 3, 2006 at 3:43 pm

Al Findlay has a strange website called "That Was Me" with the strange purpose of identifying background lurkers that accidentally (or not) got into the photo.

This one is taken by EdT, who commented:

"Less of `That was me!`, and more of `That was my father!`; my Dad got so pissed off with being asked to get out of the way of people`s photos that he started standing behind groups of tourists with an inane smile on his face. I happened to be standing behind the photographer and caught him in the act. So, if you`re a member of that Argentinian school group and you`re wondering who the hell the strange guy is in the top- right-hand corner, now you know… I`m so dreadfully sorry"

Giant Things with Girls, a Recurring Old Movie Theme.

Posted by Alex in Film on October 3, 2006 at 3:41 pm

The premise of the website is simple: post pictures of giant things (gorillas, monsters) from old films carrying the girl victim.

Suprisingly, this is a recurring theme in a lot of movies! Link (some thumbnail images mildly NSFW) – Thanks Yayo!

Girl Swallowed Cobblestones in Anger.

Posted by Alex in Health on October 3, 2006 at 3:39 pm

I can easily imagine doing stupid things out of anger, but swallowing stones isn’t one of them:

A girl from Foshan, China, swallowed down more than 20 cobblestones in a moment of anger after a big quarrel with her boyfriend. Initially, she thought the stones would be flushed out after clearing her bowels, but unfortunately they remained intact within her body for the next few days.

To make matters worse, she constantly felt that the stones were knocking against each other within her stomach which caused some pain and discomfort.

Six-Sided Harmonica.

Posted by Alex in Music, Pictures on October 3, 2006 at 3:36 pm

From the website:

Made by the renowned Hohner instrument company founded in Germany in 1857 and manfucturer of harmonicas used by such Blues luminaries as Howlin Wolf, Little Walter, and Junior Wells, this unique musical instrument, which has been in continuous production since before 1900, combines six harmonicas into a single component, creating the largest tonal range available in any Hohner tremolo model. Tremolo harmonicas employ two reeds per note, and each harmonica on this instrument has 24 double holes for a total of 48 reeds per harmonica that produce a warm vibrato characteristic of the world-famous Hohner sound.

I guess by posting something like Cecil Dill’s "musical hands" previously on Neatorama, I deserve it when people submit their weird musical videoclips.

Three-Year-Old Boy Bought Car on eBay.

Posted by Alex in Auto & Transportation, Baby & Kids on October 3, 2006 at 4:36 am

Jack Neal, a 3-year-old boy, was so good at using the computer that he bought a £9,000 pink Nissan Figaro on eBay when his parents left the computer without logging out!

Mrs Neal, of Sleaford, Lincolnshire, said she had left her eBay password in her computer and her son had used the "buy it now" button.

She said: "Jack’s a whizz on the PC and just pressed all the right buttons.

Luckily, the seller thought the whole thing was amusing.

Tilt-Shift Fakes on Flickr.

Posted by Alex in Pictures on October 3, 2006 at 4:34 am

Neatorama reader Jim Perry suggested this Flickr group photo pool called "Tilt-shift miniature fakes", which reminded me of a Boing Boing post a while ago on a step-by-step how-to "fake" the effect of expensive tilt-shift lens in photography with Photoshop.

This fantastic photo above is that of a real Seattle hillside, taken by Flickr user kamera_kat.

Chess Toiletgate.

Posted by Alex in Everything Else on October 3, 2006 at 4:33 am

Ah, can’t believe I went out of town and missed the biggest news in the role of gastrointestinal ailments in competition since Joel "GI Joe" Sherman (that’s GI for gastrointestinal; Sherman’s known for his IBS ailments) became the 1997 Scrabble Champion!

The row began after game four when Topalov complained that Kramnik was visiting the toilet up to 50 times during the six-hour encounter. The implication was that the Russian – who was leading the match 3-1 – might be consulting computers in the privacy of the cubicle, an area not covered by CCTV.

On Friday the International Chess Federation’s (Fide) appeals committee ruled that Kramnik’s toilet should be locked and that the players must use a solitary bathroom. Kramnik refused to start game five in protest – accusing the appeals committee of being biased – and forfeited the game.
