I beg to differ. I only have a few Calvin and Hobbes books, and I’ve read this strip. Also, I’m too young to have seen it in the paper. I’ll go through all of my books and find it.

Yeah, seems familiar. But it could be just a similarly-themed one. After all, comics are known to repeat material in subtly different ways.

I swear I’ve seen that strip before. I have all of the books, both in the individual books and the collection, and I swear I’ve seen it. I was 7 when Watterson stopped writing for the papers so I’m pretty sure I never read it in the paper….who knows, it’s a mystery!

I have all the main softcover books, and while the set-up is the same as another one, the punchline is different- IIRC.

Yeah, there’s definitely been other strips where Calvin’s mom says that Hobbes is getting dirty and needs a bath. The reason that this one is so rare is probably because it’s stupid. (I love C&H, but this one’s pretty bad.)

The reason you have seen this strip before is that it is all over the web. The author does speak the truth.

‘Fraid not. It’s in the Complete collection. Not in any of the other books, though (I believe it would likely have ended up in the second book, “Something Under the Bed Is Drooling”). As Watterson states in his introduction, every strip printed in the newspaper is in the collection, and all the additional elements from all the books are also reprinted.
