Harrod Blank’s Camera Van.

By Alex in Art, Auto & Transportation, Pictures on Aug 23, 2006 at 6:03 pm

Harrod Blank had a dream in which he covered his car with cameras, then drove around town to take pictures of people on the streets. Two years later, with help of his friends, Harrod completed the Camera Van (complete with working cameras!):

Wanting to impress even people in airplanes and from the tops of buildings and bridges, Harrod wrote "Smile" in Kodak Instamatic Cameras on top of the van. When he showed his mother the roof, she just shook her head and smiled, "You are really…obsessed!"

It’s a great van and I am glad to hear it is still running and working. I saw it ten years ago (or was it 11?) at Duke University when Harrod was in the area. He’s a nice guy and the project of taking photos of people reacting to the van is actually a work of inspired genius. His was the first really good art car I ever saw. Delighted to hear he’s still “driving the dream.”
