The name of the little mountain town he lived in is Granby, Colorado. I live very near there, on the other side of the National Park (Rocky Mountain National Park) from Granby.

When justice is deaf, it is time for drastic measures. I am amazed that I had never heard of this before (living on ye olde continent). While this story is very sad, it is the proof that it can sometimes take only one person to act and deliver a clear message. In that case in a really theatrical way but stunning! There should be a day to celebrate his memory: MARVIN’S PAYBACK DAY!

    Unarguably GENIUS.

I’m still curious to know what locals would have to say about it today.

It’s “Granby”, not “Grunby” or “Grandby”. Here’s the town web site:

    Welcome to Granby

It was a tragic, definitely unfunny event for all concerned. Several businesses and homes were destroyed, and the dozer driver–no hero–killed himself after delivering his “message”. It’s fortunate that no one else was killed or injured, and the town will never be quite the same.

    Here’s a follow-up story from a Denver newspaper:

How sad and tragic for all involved. When the government can take your business and your property for whatever they decide is for the greater economic good, we all lose. Building necessary infrastructure is one thing but taking from one business owner for the good of another is UNAMERICAN. This is not freedom, this is tyranny. That being said, Marvin Heemeyer was completely wrong and his actions bordered on insanity. No winners. Everybody a loser.

Of course this guy was a hero. He had the courage to stand up do what needed to be done. The town, and the rest of us, will think twice before running ramshod over a person’s rights like that.
You can whimper on about how people got hurt; but it was necessary. Until we all learn to treat each other with respect and decency, this type of thing will continue.

Actually I am a local… Unfortunately Marv was a good guy but he was NOT a hero. He didn’t just try to bull doze specific people’s businesses, he also shot at the large propane bullets in town repeatedly which(if they had exploded) could have caused many deaths. Too many times Americans try to make hero’s out of crazy people. He ruined a lot of people’s lives in that town and took his own in the process… He also ruined many people’s businesses that were innocent of having anything to do with him or his property. Was that really worth it? There are better ways of handling things.
