Five-Legged Dog.

Posted by Alex in Animals & Pets on July 16, 2006 at 11:10 am

Charlie the dog has five – count ‘em – five legs. From Local6:

Two veterinarians who have treated Charlie since he was found in Alabama said they have never seen anything like it before.

The dog’s right front leg is two conjoined limbs that appear to be paws, according to the report.

Charlie’s surrogate parents are hoping for surgery before he’s adopted, but the surgery is going to cost at least $1,400.

The agency has found a family in neighboring Georgia to adopt both Charlie and his brother Hank, but a representative says the deformity must be fixed.

Photojournalist Wendell Phillips took this picture of a child in China, and wrote:

To many, this is called the opening of convenience as demonstrated by this young girl in Shanghai

Actually, I’ve seen firsthand that this is quite common in China. I guess if you can’t get diapers (or if they’re not affordable), then this is the next best thing!

The Midas Bacteria.

Posted by Alex in Science & Tech on July 16, 2006 at 1:01 am

Frank Reith discovered that bacteria may be responsible for the formation of gold nuggets in mines!

Dr Reith’s research has shown that bacteria play a significant role in the formation of secondary gold grains.

His study of gold grains from the Tomakin Park and Hit or Miss gold mines in southern New South Wales and northern Queensland, respectively, led to a series of discoveries, which showed that specific bacteria present on these gold grains precipitate gold from solution.
