Marco Evaristti's Ice Cube Project.

Posted by Alex in Arts & Crafts, Pictures on July 13, 2006 at 7:17 pm

Artist Marco Evaristti needed 790 gallons (3,000 liters) of red paint, three fire hoses, two icebrakers, a twenty-man crew, and two hours to paint an iceberg in the Ilulissat Fiord, Greenland in 2004.

Evaristti said: "It’s so poetic, it looks like a red pea"

Selling Beer in the Name of the Lord.

Posted by Alex in Advertising on July 13, 2006 at 10:26 am

Someone "modded" a billboard in Texas to feature a picture of Jesus holding up a Budweiser:

The company that leases the billboard believes vandals made the poster at home and then pasted it on top of the ad that’s supposed to be there. It shows Jesus holding a Budweiser in between the phrases "Jesus, King of Jews" and "Jesus, King of Beers."

Foot-in-Mouth of the Day: Senator Joe Biden on Indians.

Posted by Alex in Politics, Video Clips on July 13, 2006 at 10:25 am

Presidential hopeful Senator Joe Biden (D-Delaware) was chatting up a supporter of Indian-descent in New Hampshire, when he said:

"In Delaware, the largest growth in population is Indian Americans, moving from India. You cannot go to a 7-11 or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I’m not joking!"

Dude, Have You Seen My 38-ton Sculpture?

Posted by Alex in Arts & Crafts on July 13, 2006 at 10:24 am

Reina Sofia museum in Madrid "lost" a sculpture by American artist Richard Serra. I’m sure in itself that’s not unusual, but the lost sculpture is made from 38-ton of steel!

This year the museum admitted losing track of the work, Equal-Parallel/Guernica-Bengasi, for which the culture ministry paid about £150,000. …

A police investigation concluded that theft was implausible. The piece, which had taken five cranes to move, was thought to be too awkward to handle, and it was worth almost nothing.

It was thought the artwork had not been moved but was incorporated into the foundations or grounds of the ministry.

Giant Yellow Jacket Nest.

Posted by Alex in Animal on July 13, 2006 at 10:23 am

Shelly and Tony Roberts’ got some bug problem: yellow jackets, to be exact:

Rising up out of the water, it looks like another tree stump from a distance. But a closer look is enough to take your attention, and maybe your breath.

Hundreds of thousands of yellow jackets swarm in and around their nest on Shelley and Tony Roberts’ pond. They can’t believe it got so big so quick.

"I reckon it was a couple of months ago," said Shelley. "All it was was a little stump and we noticed what looked like mushrooms growing up."

It looks to be about six feet tall and three feet wide. No one’s gotten close enough to measure.

The Ultimate Stare Down - Unflinching Triumph: Philip Rockhammer Story.

Posted by Alex in Sports, Video Clips on July 13, 2006 at 1:04 am

From the website:

Philip is an ordinary guy from Sacramento, California. He doesn’t look like an athlete or talk like an athlete, but make no mistake, Philip Rockhammer is a professional athlete.

"Unflinching Triumph" immerses the audience into the life of Philip Rockhammer and the underground world of Professional Staredown.

Hey, if domino is good enough of a "sport" for ESPN, why not staredowns?

Steampunk Transformers.

Posted by Alex in Everything Else, Pictures on July 13, 2006 at 1:03 am

Neatorama reader Amanda Jeffrey introduced us to steampunk [wiki] is a form of speculative fiction, kind of like what the future would be like if robots and machines still use steam engines as power source.

This one above is from IDW’s The Transformers: Evolution, with Guideo Guidi’s illustrations of Transformers in steampunk.

Lunatic Complained About "Rogue Helicopters" on TV.

Posted by Alex in Everything Else, Video Clips on July 13, 2006 at 1:02 am

From the website:

Local lunatic David Thompson complains to Charlotte, NC city council during a community access forum, which is conveniently captured on tape and broadcast live on the local community access channel. There aren’t enough tags to cover his rant against ice in teh arena, rogue helicopter pilots, and "terrorist p*ssies".
