Uh, "Dr" Mike, what advice would you give then, oh, ye of the Great Medical Knowledge?

How about the medical facts that such a level of cholesterol is unhealthy - you might want to refer to the list of states leading the obesity epidemic. Or how about the fact that brains are often a respository for animal contaminants? And what the hell is the "blood-brain" barrier? Do you believe there's no blood in your brain?

If you like 'em, you like 'em. There are regional foods all over the place and in moderation all can be (ugh) eaten. I can be sure it has nothing to do with your 1) culture (North/South be damned), 2) your politics (uh, how did Obama get here? George Bush anyone?), or 3) where you choose to live (you think northerners are moving southward?)

Try eating a can of Polite in Don't-Look-Stupid gravy.

I like Caryolyn's blog, and she is right. I'd also like to ask the question: Has anyone heard of the blood-brain barrior? That's the membrane that protects the brain from chemicals, trama, etc. Anyway, most chemical compounds cannot penetrate that barrior, except grape-seed extract. So, brains are one of the healthiest meats you can eat. Think about that while you eat your next serving of tofu from China soaked in Swine Flu feces.

Hey JC, I'm from Texas and want all these Armour "Pork Brains and Milk Gravy" sent to us southerners where we appreciate them. I'm sure the Yankees will keep the "pork" part and actually want the "Obama Brains", which they can have.

What a bunch of food woosies you are here, commenting without medical knowledge. Such over-reactionaries. You'd eat it now starving, or way back when. And it's a good-tasting, well-done product. Your ignorant over-hyped reaction will probably get this Armour product pulled when it would be a wonderful export product to 3rd world countries for 4 year old or younger brain nutrition. Why just through good meat product offal away when there's a world to feed. But, save some for me to have with my liver and onions.

I like many of u was raised on Pork Brains/Eggs. Honestly, I don't see what the big deal is. True one 5 oz can may have > 3 grams of cholesterol but normally one person would not eat the whole can by themselves; for it is mixed with several eggs and then dished out. I would be more than happy to fix U some, that way u can sit and eat them while I play the banjo for u, LOL. I have not heard of any one dying from eating pork brains, but I have heard of people dying from eating raw fish, oysters, etc,.

P.S., Long Live the South, and would all of U yanks that hate the south so bad, stop moving here!!!!!!!

For Christmas, my dad and I had a tradition that we did for a few years when I was younger. We'd roast a baby pig, whole, and we'd split the head in half. Each of us would have a half pig's skull on our plate and we'd scoop out the brains. It was actually quite delicious.

My mom and brother would always just watch us in disgust. What can I say? I liked it!

Now adding milk gravy to it? Ewwwww!

I had a fun rolling battle with my non custodial preteen daughter for years. We'd go grocery shopping and I'd toss a can hog brains in milk gravy into the cart. She would freak and remove it every time.

I bought a can on an off weekend and she saw it while foraging for goodies when she was 13.

She "told" me to get rid of it, so I popped it open and put the pink, mealy looking gack into the cat's food dish.

The cat, of course, immediately began noshing on the unlooked for feast.

Jen pleaded with the kitty to stop eating brains, but Midnight would have none of that nonsense.

I had to giggle and say: "Your kitty eats brains...Braaaaiiins Meow."

She looked horrified for a second and then realized I was being silly and that cans of brains were legal and had to laugh.

What the heck is Armor foods doing canning this stuff? Granted, its all in hot dogs anyway with other unsavory parts, but it begs the question as to what market is this stuff intended for?? And why stop with hog brains? Where are the 2lb cans of pork balls in mint sauce? If there is some dude counting his nickels to buy cans of this stuff (I'm thinking that banjo kid from Deliverance and all his buddies...) then I suppose he would think just about any canned pork product would taste good on his wonder toast and armor is all about satisfying his cravings....

This kind of food is probably not bad for you if you spend 12 hours a day plowing and harvesting. But for those of us who work at Computers It's an invitation to suicide

This is food for the people so goddamn stupid they are ignorant of the fact that people traditionally ate brains and stuff like pigsfeet because that is what the butcher threw out in the trash and they had no money to buy meat.
If you eat this crap or the stupid southern diet that includes these refuse parts-
you deserve everything you get..

I was also raised up on this. My late mother would fix the brains and eggs occasionally. She would fry the brains up in a cast iron skillet and then add eggs and them scramble the mixture up. She would always add some black pepper. Very tasty.

BNefan - You don't say where you live in TN but in Nashville and surrounding areas we find Pork Brains in a 5 oz can packaged by Foell Packing Co, P O Box 2340, Sanford NC 27331. The label will say Rose and is around $1.49 a can. I wish I could say I had tried them but I have not. My 2 very good friends love them with scrambled eggs. They were raised on them and one of them just turned 85 and she is very healthy so it must not be too damaging to our health.

I know the H.G. Hills stores in Nashville carry them still but have not seen them anywhere else.

Good Luck with finding your BRAINS......I know we have brains in TN..........:)

Saw brains & eggs on a menu at Campbell's Diner in Fuquay-Varina (yes, that's really the name of the town), NC this morning and gave it a try. Quite tasty. I'd eat it again.

If anyone is still monitoring this thread, I just wanted to add that brains-n-eggs were a delicacy when I was growing up. You fry up the pork brains and then add to the eggs when you are scrambling them. It just adds a salty meat flavor.

The reason that I found this discussion is because I was googling the product. I have returned home to Tennessee on a business trip and wanted my 86 year old mother to cook some for breakfast. Unfortunately, I can't find a grocery store that carries pork brains anymore!

Man, I want to try these things. I didn't even know that they're out there.

It's pretty difficult to get brains these days with all the madcow stuff circulating.

I love to put pork brains with kraft cheddar cheese mixed with a shrimp salad. I seem to fix this whenever the royals play ball. Wallace says it good on frosted flakes, using the milk gravy instead of milk.

I like eating these pork brain with whole milk! My brother Wallace adds them to his cereal. I used to be overweight but after eating a few cans of these, all I can say is yum, yum! Good for zombies too.

Little more to Mark's posting. American sources (howstuffworks for example) cite that cholesterol and saturated fats both increase the level of blood cholesterol and thus increase the risk of blood and heart disease. So does cigarette smoking, big tummy and too little excercise. Here in Finland, it is publicly instructed to avoid animal-based fats if you belong to the high-risk group (several risk factors).

I just had lunch, and now I'm hungry again!

You know what would make those pig brains perfect? A nice lump of slowly-melting butter right on top. Mm!

The difference being that coconut milk doesn't make you want to puke. So you just keep eating those pig melons, Mark, and I'll stick to a hamburger, thank you very much!

Cholesterol in food doesn't really directly translate into blood cholesterol. If that were the case, eggs would be really bad for you (which they aren't, if you've been keeping up). The saturated fat is what becomes blood cholesterol. Something like coconut milk would be much worse than this product, strictly from a health standpoint.

It's probably more the brains themselves.
That's what bears eat to fatten up for the winter.
