Stray Cat Comforts Depressed Orangutan.

Posted by Alex in Animal on March 10, 2006 at 12:30 pm

Two years ago, a 45 year old orangutan named Tondalayo lost her mate. Because of her age, she could not take another mate nor be moved to another zoo. Tonda had been depressed since, zookeepers introduced her to a stray tabby cat.

Zookeepers named the cat, T.K. — short for "Tondalayo’s Kitty."

They play together, cuddle and sleep together each night. They have been together constantly for more than a month.

Petunia’s passing has left our remaining dog, an Old English Sheepdog named Marmalade, very depressed. This story about Tondalayo and TK reminds me of Marmalade.

If Koko and Tondalayo get kitties, why not Marmalade?

Kaycray, we actually have a cat - a gray pound kitty named Nermal. Marmalade loves her, but unfortunately the cat doesn’t like dogs. Now maybe if I have an orangutan, she’ll probably like that.

Hi, I work at Zoo World in Panama City Beach. It is amazing what Tk has done for Tonda. It goes to show that everyone has a need for personal contact. Zoo World is a non-profit zoo. If anyone would like to help support Tonda and her kitty or any of the other animals please visit http://www.zoo-world.us . It cheers me up every morning to see the two together and the special bond they have formed!

Here’s an idea to help curb depressed animals: Stop taking them out of nature and locking them up.
