No Titanium Rod? McGuyver Surgeon Used Screwdriver Instead!

By Alex in Science & Tech on Feb 15, 2006 at 10:04 pm

Dr. Robert Ricketson of Hilo Medical Center, Hawaii ran out of titanium rods when he was operating on Arturo Iturralde’s neck.

So, he decided to use a screwdriver instead!

Ricketson said he did not feel he could risk keeping the man under anesthetic with an unstable spine for any longer so he made the decision to substitute the rods with a screwdriver, according to the report.

I know Neatorama picked this up off of the Local6.com website, but aren’t those actually 2 screws, not “a screwdriver”?

he ‘screwed’ in a ‘screw’ driver. I guess you could say that he ‘f*cked’ up.

I think the surgeon used a sawed-off screwdriver in place of the titanium rod.

Eggtrailer: look again at the xray, the screws go from left to right, the broken screwdriver is in two pieces, going up and down, through the screws. I knew this Dr. in college. It’s a sad thing to see what he became.
