Oliver Blackwell's WashDryIron.

Posted by Alex in Everything Else, Home & Garden on February 14, 2006 at 3:22 pm

Oliver is a student at the University of Plymouth who thought up this chore-busting idea for his final degree project.

The machine washes, dries and irons clothes in separate compartments and is said to eliminate colour runs, shrinkage and ironing.

It can tackle up to 16 items at a time, including king-size bed sheets.

Because hangers are used, they do not become entangled and have 83% fewer creases, according to the designer. The items are then dried and ironed by hot air blown across them.

It’s what housewives really want for Valentine’s: Link

BitterSweets: Valentine's Heart Candy for the Unloved.

Posted by Alex in Food & Drinks on February 14, 2006 at 3:17 pm

Straight from the website:

Like the ubiquitous candy "conversation" hearts, "BitterSweets(tm)" are made of flavored, chalky-tasting sugar and sport a message on their face. But unlike other candy hearts, ours are stamped with bitter musings and mockeries perfectly suited to the dejected spirits of those who will spend the holiday alone, or wishing they were.

Messages recalling an almost forgotten, unbearably painful memory of being dumped. Or perhaps of a dysfunctional, psychotic ex-girlfriend or boyfriend. Or of that cruel-hearted girl (or boy) in elementary school who rejected your valentine solicitations, informing you that Jake (or Holly) was "so totally way hotter."

Posted by Alex in Animal, Pictures on February 14, 2006 at 3:12 pm

Barbara Opper said that a goat born with a perfectly shaped heart on its fur was a Valentine’s Day gift from her deceased husband.

The goat, "Love," was born on Feb. 7. Barbara Opper says the heart is a sign from her husband, who died nine years ago.

According to Opper, her husband would go every year on Feb. 7 to buy her Valentine’s Day gift.

Cheney-O-Rama!

Posted by Alex in Everything Else, Pictures on February 14, 2006 at 3:28 am

By now, you’ve all heard of VP Dick Cheney shooting his hunting partner in the face (news article). Here’s a couple of links:

Wikipedia’s got an interesting observation:

Dick Cheney is the first known Vice President to shoot someone while in office since Aaron Burr shot Alexander Hamilton in the famous Hamilton-Burr duel. An interesting coincidence between the events is that both victims were attorneys.

And last, but not least: Daryl Cagle’s Pro Cartoonist Index: Cheney Shoots …

Fast Food Restaurants Ice Worse Than Their Toilet Water.

Posted by Alex in Food & Drinks, Science & Tech on February 14, 2006 at 3:24 am

Next time you order a drink at a fast food restaurant, ask for no ice. Jasmine Roberts, a seventh-grade student at Benito Middle School in New Tampa, Florida, tells you why:

When it came time for her to choose a science project, she wondered about the ice in fast food restaurants.

"My hypothesis was that the fast food restaurants’ ice would contain more bacteria that the fast food restaurants’ toilet water."

"I found that 70-percent of the time, the ice from the fast food restaurant’s contain more bacteria than the fast food restaurant’s toilet water."

The Johnstone's Rotating House.

Posted by Alex in Home & Garden on February 14, 2006 at 3:23 am

Al and Janet Johnstone’s San Diego home is unique: it is a rotating platform!

The house rides on one very large bearing (six foot in diameter – carrying 1,364,000 pounds dynamic load) and forty small bearings (six inches in diameter – carrying 35,000 pounds dynamic load each or 1,400,000 pounds total). The speed of the house is variable from one rotation in thirty minutes to one rotation in twenty-four hours and can be stopped in any position at any time. Starting or stopping the house rotating is as easy as turning a light switch on or off.

Scientists to Test Joan of Arc Remains.

Posted by Alex in Everything Else on February 14, 2006 at 3:19 am

A team of French scientists is planning to analyze whether a supposed remain of Joan of Arc is really hers.

The tests, which will take six months, will not be able to say with certainty that the remains are Joan of Arc’s, because there is no known DNA sample from her to compare them with, said Dr. Philippe Charlier of the Raymond-Poincare Hospital in Garches, west of Paris.

But the analyses will determine with "absolute certitude" if the remains could not be hers, Charlier said at a news conference.

No DNA comparison can be done with possible descendants since Joan of Arc’s supposed family tree is "probably false," he said.
